"Secret societies. Magical boarding schools. Supernatural beings... What could go wrong?
I'm Millie Brix and apparently, I'm a supernatural shifter. Funny eighteenth birthday present, right?" - Excerpt from the book Secret wolves, by G. Bailey and Regan Rosewood.
I've just finished reading the complete series, which is currently free on Kindle Unlimited ( or 77p on it/£17.50 paperback to buy. Date 3rd May 21") This book dives in rather fast with an explanation of how the main character, Millie Brix, is in the foster care system and who has been bounced around from one foster carer to another, and is currently living with some unpleasant foster parents. After a scare Millie decides to run away, ending up in an abandoned warehouse. After a quick nap she wakes up to men standing around her, gets scared and BAM! Her powers are awakened. Women appear and tell her about a shifter academy, for shifters to learn how to control their magic and how to hide in the human world, Millie originally doesn't want anything to do with them, thinking that they're crazy, but finally decides that it's better than living on the streets.
Now I've read plenty of books that are shifter themed, but this one is something different! Never have I come across a shifter book like this. When you think of shifters you think Werewolves or even Dragons... this one explains every single creature, from the typical werewolves to vampires to even witches. And our Millie here is a hybrid... witch, dragon, vampire, siren and wolf.
(Spoiler) When she was a mere human baby she was given up and along with our hunking characters- Shade, Silas, Hunter, Landon- yes you've guessed it, it's a reverse harem (but mild compared to some) was experimented on, making her a Hybrid and a powerful one at that. (Spoiler end)
Millie was just settling in, enjoying time with her friends and ignoring Amelia Ash, Hunter's sister, who does not like Millie at all, when a boy goes missing. The group go on to discover disturbing truths and realisations that not everything is as it seems.
Secrets are unravelled and suddenly no one is safe.
This book has plenty of twists and turns and trials and tribulations. This is a book where you can easily seeing something like this happening if this world was real.
Without giving too much away here's my thought: It was brilliant. A different take on the typical shifter romances, not too smutty and with enough trials and hardships that you truly feel part of the story. You easily fall for the men, none of which are possessive 'Alphas' and unlike many books, actually care about the main character even after bedding her. Their romances don't all come easily and they fight for each other always, even the men. (Spoiler) When Millie looses her powers in one of the books her men rally around her, protect her and help teach her to defend herself. (Spoiler end) They help comfort her when her fear of abandonment creeps up and the group fights to right wrongs and make the entire world a safer place for all shifters. The characters are all flawed and have their own issues, which makes them feel more real.
I devoured this series and couldn't wait to keep reading once my children were in bed, staying up way too late.
If you want a book series that has a heroine, men you can truly fall for and an action packed world where you can actually imagine these things happening, if it were real, then this is the book for you. It isn't just a 'smut' book, it's a romance with a real plot and relatable characters.
If you enjoyed The Hunger games then there's a massive chance you'll enjoy this too.
